It’s true that many churches misunderstand sexual addiction. Let’s be honest. THE CHURCH has a significant disconnect regarding the issues of sexual compulsivity.
Churches and their leaders often shame and guilt individuals, which in turn perpetuates the secrets of addicts. The church shows more compassion for alcohol and drugs than this issue.
Why Do Churches Misunderstand Sexual Addiction?
Just why is this IGNORANCE so rampant?
In their IGNORANCE, church leadership often thinks that sex addiction is a “choice” when it is and is not. They have no clue as to the brain, the patterns of the cause, the traumas in the background, low self-esteem, family of origin, etc.
I am not making excuses for people with an addiction, but I have extreme compassion for them. They need to know that freedom, healing, and transformation can take place with hard work, the right educated counselor, strong accountability, and attending a support group over a long period of time.
Again, to repeat, short-term counseling, rehab, etc., will not work. Why is that? Years of patterns have been set, which are the neuropathways in the brain, and the chemicals in the brain demand that its needs get met.
But…
Your brain can change.
Your neuropathways can redirect.
And you can heal from sexual addiction.
The hard work to achieve freedom includes effective Christian counseling and support group attendance. Most of all, it requires that you develop a deep and sustaining relationship with the Lord. Delving into His Word and standing on His promises will utterly change your life.
So, while many churches misunderstand sexual addiction, rest assured that Jesus understands. He is the way, the truth, and the light. Your faith and belief in God’s promises and your absolute commitment to transformation will heal your sexual compulsivity.
