My work with clients in overcoming sex addiction is due, in large part, to Dr. Patrick Carnes. In the early years, the deeper my understanding of this addiction, the more I kept hearing Patrick Carnes’s name. He’s the expert of experts on this subject.
At the time, I was not a “certified counselor,” but I had already started a support group called Battle Lines. Let me tell you about Battle Lines, which I began in May 2004 and ended in June 2019. A total of 28,432 men attended on Tuesday nights and, at times, an additional class on Saturday mornings.
I contacted IITAP to pursue certification and education, but they refused to train me because of my lack of licensure. My group was the largest in the United States, so I kept knocking. Finally, Tami VerHelst, Vice President, in her consulting with Dr. Patrick Carnes, accepted me for training despite my lack of licensure. I was the first person without a license to undergo this training. It began in San Diego, California, and continued in Arizona, with sessions held in Tucson and Phoenix.
